During the four years of World War I, the front line was just in the middle of the industrial region of East of France. All the industries of coal and iron mining, all the iron factories were completely destroyed. There was a very important need of engineers to rebuild the nation.
During the fall 1919, the Ecole des Mines de Nancy was created by the common willpower of companies and universities to increase locally the number of qualified scientists. This common willpower of creation was the beginning of a close cooperation between academic institutions and scientific and technical organizations.
At the birth of the school, only two departments existed, the mining department and metallurgy department. Now, 81 years later, the Ecole des Mines has 6 departments with six laboratories of investigations of national fame.
During the first Commencement Day in 1921 only three students graduated in engineering. In 1999, 178 students graduated.
