International Master degree

Nowadays companies are more and more involved in the search for engineers with an international training, mobile geographically as well as professionally. A future engineer must be aware of the global economy and international negociation. A student following the MSc courses at the Ecole des Mines de Nancy will develop an advanced knowlege in cross-cultural skills.

There are three MSc currently opened to international students:

Purposes

Today companies must take into account the globalization of the economy; this is true not only of multinational firms which have been immersed for years in an international environment, but also for more modest companies, now compelled to consider the market at an European, if not at a global level.

As a result, companies are more and more searching for future executives, mobile geographically as well as in their activities. They expect two main qualities from an executive:
- a great intellectual adaptability, so that they can manage industrial projects requiring different skills (technical, economical, managerial...);
- a good knowledge of a foreign culture, in order to entrust them projects abroad.

The MSc's created at the Ecoles des Mines have been especially designed to suit these needs.

Student profile

The MSc programs at the Ecole des Mines de Nancy are open to students with the following profile:

  • Holders of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in science or engineering,

  • Students who have completed at least 4 years of scientific studies in Higher Education,

  • Practising engineers with at least 3 years' industrial experience.

Candidates must have a minimum level in English: Cambridge First Certificate, TOEFL new score of at least 200 (550 old score scale) or equivalent level.

A fair knowledge of the French language will be appreciated. However, French language tuition will be offered throughout the academic part of the programs. For complete beginners in French, a summer course is organised. (Contact the GEM National Office)

Organisation of the courses

The three MSc programs are organized after the same pattern. They are divided in three periods, from September to December the following year: two academic semesters followed by a 5-month internship.

Each student is assigned a 'referent', a teacher or researcher who follows him throughout his studies at the Mines and the internship. The referent has regular interviews with the student and is his privileged interlocutor.

The academic part of the programs comprises lectures in the choosen engineering field, seminars, tutorials and project work. It counts for 600 hours/60 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System - 2 ECTS credits are equivalent to 1 US credit). The first semester lasts from September to January, the second from February to June. Each comprises 300 hours of lectures, for an average amount of 20 hours per week.

For both semesters, the complemenary language lectures, especially in French as a foreign language, can take up to 10 hours per week, in order to provide a quick assimilation of lectures made in French and an easy integration among French students.

During the first semester, up to 75% of the lectures are made in English; this proportion may be much reduced for the second semester, depending on the level attained by the students. The student will be given text-books corresponding to the subjects he studies.

The 5-month internship in industry will allow the students to apply the new competences. It may also take place in a laboratory, provided that the student takes part in a work corresponding to a contract with a company of his country, and that the company has given a formal agreement. During the internship the student it to have regular contacts with the referent, who will see the intern at least once in the enterprise.

The internship will be found by the person in charge of the MSc, in agreement with the student's wishes. It will be the subject of a report written in French and of a defence, also made in French.

Assessment

Assessment of the students

It is a continuous assessment, which allows a closer survey of the student, so that the referent can help him overcome momentary difficulties. Moreover, knowing where one stands in every subject allows one to reorganise one's workload in order to succeed better. Frequent random little tests, with a final test or personal project, will allow an accurate evaluation of the work done by the student for each subject matter. A level is attributed to each course, following the European criteria of the ECTS system. Finally, for each subject, the student will be attributed one of the following mentions (distinctions): Insufficient, Weak, Passable, Good, Very Good, Excellent. The mention Weak or better permit the attribution of the credits associated with the lecture.

Attribution of the diploma

The MSc is awarded when 60% of the credits have been obtained with honours, i.e. with at least a Good mention. If this is not the case, the candidate will be given a certificate proving he has followed the course.

Continuous improvement of the teaching

The referents will made known to the person in charge of each MSc the problems encountered by the students, concerning either the lectures themselves or the organisation. Every month a council will discuss the possible improvements. Minor problems will be solved as soon as possible.

Administration

Each MSc is managed by a special commission, comprising the coordinator for the MSc's, the person in charge of the Master, three teachers, and a representative of industry in the given field. The members of the commission are appointed by the management of the Ecole des Mines.

MSc in Industrial Economy and International Management

This MSc deals with industrial projects from an organizational point of view. It prepares the student to an international activity, either in a multinational team working in his homeland, or abroad. The students will acquire:
    - Technical skills related to project management: methods, TQM...
    - Knowledge of the organization of global economy: main regulation authorities, contracts negotiation, main commercial zones.
    - Cross-cultural skills, much time being devoted to languages and cultures.

MSc in International Projects on Natural Resources
and Territories Management

The management of great projects for exploiting the natural resources and local planning are today closely linked with the concept of sustainable developpement.

This evolution affects the technical part of the programs, but in the same time, leads to consider the consequences of the realisation of a project and its influence on the environment.

Old works are often neglected after the end of the activities for which they had been built, a situation which is less and less accepted. The purpose of this formation is to learn how to manage with all the present and future aspects of the development of a project.
